Louisburg, the county
seat and largest town (pop 4,200), is located in the geographical
center of the county and was founded in 1779 when Franklin County was
established.
Only 21 miles northeast of the state
capital of Raleigh, three interstate highways (40, 85, 95) are easily
reached from Franklin County. The internationally renowned Research
Triangle Park, the world's largest research complex, is only 41 miles
away.
Franklin County was named after American forefather, Benjamin
Franklin. The county was formed in 1779 from the southern half of Bute
County. In 1881 parts of Franklin County, Granville County and Warren
County were combined to form Vance County. Founded in 1779, Louisburg
is home to Louisburg College, the nation's oldest 2-year coeducational
